Québec | N/A | 60 minutes | Français | Recherche

Québec | N/A | 60 minutes | Anglais | Éducation

At the post-secondary level, various academic accommodations and supports are available for students with learning disabilities to ensure their success. Entering the workforce, however, can look very different regarding what supports exist. How can we bridge this gap between education and the workplace? How can we create an inclusive perioperative learning environment as educators, mentors, and preceptors?

Concurrent : Perioperative Practice Has Changed, and Now, So Have CSA Standards

Québec | N/A | 60 minutes | English | Administration

ORNAC standards are the foundation for clinical practice, and are closely aligned with the national standards published by the Canadian Standards Association. Standards contain guidance for safety across clinical, technical, environmental, and administrative aspects of surgical care. CSA is making a bold move that will change three areas of safe perioperative practice, by combining the standards for electrosurgery, laser surgery, and management of surgical plume, into one comprehensive and updated standard. This will eliminate overlap and highlight the common hazards and risks associated with all three, and specify control measures needed for each. It will address documentation, risk assessment, procedures for managing equipment, audit, educational criteria, and much more. This presentation will describe the scope and content of the new standard and point the way towards the future of safe management of energy based devices as they become more and more prevalent in our healthcare facilities.

Concurrent : SCA Health Goes Virtual with Periop 101

Québec | N/A | 60 minutes | English | Education

ASCs have been facing nursing shortages that put a strain on staffing needs. They have faced recruitment and retention challenges leading to added use of contract labor. This negatively impacts nursing skill and competence. Our ASC leaders engaged an interdisciplinary team to design a perioperative nursing program. AORN Periop 101 is a blended program, comprised of online modules, weekly class discussions and skills development with preceptors. Organizational specific education was added to the program. With COVID, ASCs were challenged to restructure staffing strategies. SCA took this opportunity to create a virtual program. The program was offered to all SCA nurses. We shifted from in-person learning to a VIRTUAL plan. Quality of the program remained, and education continued. 130 nurses have graduated to date. These nurses can work competently in the OR. Developing SCA nurses has reduced contract labor use. The program has prepared nurses to provide outstanding, safe patient care.
